Why this exists

Deciding what to do about your home's water is a strange purchase. The problem is invisible, the stakes feel personal, and most of the information online is written by someone trying to sell you equipment. The result is predictable: people buy softeners for problems softeners don't fix, install filters against contaminants nobody measured, or scare themselves with area-level statistics that say nothing about their own tap.

Home Water Compass exists to make that decision boring and clear. We help you identify your likely water system, see what is actually reported about it, understand what that evidence can and cannot tell you, and pick one honest next step: learn more, get an appropriate test, compare technically suitable products, or talk to one named local professional.

What we are — and are not

• We are an independent decision guide. Our recommendations are produced by published, versioned rules — see our methodology.
• We are not a utility, a laboratory, a regulator or a government program.
• We cannot test the water at your tap, and we never pretend area-level data is a substitute for a test. Every report says exactly which is which.
• We do not produce a "water safety score." Blending utility reports, symptoms and lab results into one number would be convenient — and dishonest.

How we work

• Evidence first. Every value we show carries its source organization, reporting period, retrieval date and a confidence label. Public data comes from EPA records and the utilities' own Consumer Confidence Reports, linked directly so you can check us.
• Value before contact. You see your water report before we ever ask for an email. You see the provider's name before we ask for a phone number. Nothing here is bait.
• One next step, explained. Instead of a wall of products, you get one primary recommendation with the reasoning — and what we can't know — spelled out next to it.
• Honest failure states. No coverage in your area, no verified product match, a provider closed for the day, an active advisory from your utility — each of these produces a plain answer and a real alternative, never a fake success.

How we make money

Participating professionals pay for qualified contact requests, and product links may earn a commission — always disclosed next to the button, never baked silently into advice. Where we operate

We launched in the Phoenix, Arizona metro area, where our reports cover the major municipal water systems with boundaries from EPA service-area records and values taken directly from each utility's most recent water quality report. Coverage grows market by market — carefully, because every data point we publish has to carry a verifiable source. If we can't match your area yet, the site says so instead of guessing.

Corrections

If you believe any data point is wrong, tell us and include the report link. Every value traces to a named source document, so we can re-check it against the original and correct or annotate it. Our review practices are described in the editorial policy and data sources pages.
