What a water softener really costs — installed, and over five years.
The sticker price is the smallest part of the answer. Capacity, install complexity and running costs decide what you actually pay.
The four cost drivers
1. Capacity — driven by measured hardness
Grain capacity comes from your measured hardness, household size and bathrooms. Higher hardness and bigger households need larger units. An honest quote starts from a number, not a guess.
2. Installation complexity
Loop already plumbed? Ground-level utility space or a crawl space? Drain access? The same unit can differ by hundreds of dollars in labor depending on your home's layout.
3. Salt and water over five years
A softener regenerates with salt and rinse water for its whole life. Efficient metered units cost more upfront and less every month — the five-year total is the fair comparison.
4. The wrong size — the most expensive mistake
Oversized wastes salt and water on every cycle; undersized lets hardness through and wears out early. Both cost more than measuring first.

Your utility's reported range is a free start; a $12 strip or a lab test gives your home's own value.
Hardness is comfort and cost — not safety
Scale affects appliances, fixtures and lather. Anyone selling a softener as a health emergency is selling fear.
