UV systems
Ultraviolet light inactivates bacteria and other microorganisms as water flows past the lamp. It's a disinfection barrier — mostly for private wells.
What it does
- Inactivates microorganisms, including coliform bacteria, when sized to your peak flow
- Adds a continuous barrier after a well has tested positive and been remediated
- Chemical-free — nothing is added to the water
What it depends on
- Clear water. Sediment, iron and hardness shadow the lamp — prefiltration is usually required, which is why UV comes as part of a staged system
- Correct sizing and lamp maintenance. An undersized or expired lamp gives the appearance of protection without the effect
What it does not do
- UV does not remove anything — metals, nitrates, PFAS and chemicals pass straight through
- It is not a substitute for finding out why bacteria appeared: a compromised cap, casing or nearby source needs attention first
A positive bacteria test calls for official guidance and a look at the well itself before equipment. UV is a barrier, not a fix for the cause.
